During the shelter-in -place order, Elizabeth Schmitt, an English teacher at Lakehill Preparatory School, worried where people, especially children and teens, could access books with schools, libraries, and stores closed. “I decided that putting up a Little Free Library would be a good addition to our neighborhood,” Schmitt said. “I posted a call for book donations and the neighborhood answered with one family dropping off an entire tub full!” The library, located on El Cerrito off Claremont, has a wide variety of books, blank journals, and graphic novels. It also has a drop-off for non-perishable food items, hygiene items, and school supplies.

“The beauty of a Little Free Library is that anyone can take a book to read with no obligation to bring it back.” Schmitt has an Instagram account for the library @babettesbookstop. “My mother Barbara was always reading. She used to read to me at night taking us on adventures to Treasure Island and Toad Hall. I wanted to honor her memory and love of books through the library with the hope that other families will start making memories of their own,” said Schmitt.

“Claremont is thrilled to join other Far East Dallas communities that boast Little Free Libraries,” said Vikki Martin, Community Liaison for CANA. “We embrace those in our community working to make our neighborhood a better place to live, grow, and raise our families. We wanted to hold a ribbon-cutting event but decided that with the resurgence of Covid-19 that it is not a good idea at this time,” echoed Jeff Bennett, President of CANA. We encourage all to drive by and check out a book at the Little Free Library.
